25 August 1991

Dear Charlie,

The root of the problem is the fact that you are both happy and sad at the same time. In order to grow and learn from this fact, together, we should try to identify what makes you happy and what makes you sad, which you say is your family. The problem may be that you do not have family issues like some other people do, and it upsets you to think that you don't appreciate it or enjoy it as much as you should. This brings us to Michael. He, and his family issues, makes you think about yourself, and why you don't appreciate your family as much as you feel you should. Your family can be a source of happiness for you, but you must attempt to allow yourself to appreciate and feel their love. Your brother seems to be a strong source of support and comfort for you. As you begin high school, you should strengthen your relationship with him because he will be someone that will listen to you and understand you.

At the very end of the letter, you wrote that what you really wanted to write about was high school, but there is a reason that you did not write about that. Either what you really need to talk about is not high school or, if that is what you need to talk about, you need to focus on that subject in your next letter so that I can understand your fears and issues and hopefully help you. I am glad that you can look to me as a person that will listen and understand you, and I am completely willing to do that for you whether it continues to be through letters or whether we need to meet and further develop our relationship.

Love always,
Caroline
