16 September 1991

Compose a brief response in which you analyze the song lyric and based on what you know about Charlie at this point, argue why this song would have such relevance to his life.

The lyrics to the song "Asleep" suggest feelings of peace and serenity that the author wants. He feels that the only way to achieve this peace is through death (sleep), so he willingly asks to be "sung to sleep," to be left "alone," and to go to "another world." He does not want the audience to feel bad for him because this is a type of loneliness that he wants and will be deeply happy to receive. However, there will always be doubt in his mind as to his real desires and his real destiny. He demonstrates this in the repeated statement "well, there must be." This refers to the "better world" that he wishes to go to and wants so badly to believe exists but is essentially unsure.

This song is essentially how Charlie feels about certain aspects of his life. Sometimes, during his most sad states, his inner most feelings tell him that he wishes that he could reach ultimate serenity and calm; however, he is never completely sure of what he wants or what he would get if he took action towards his desires. When he reflects on Michael's situation, he wonders if that is the way that he truly wants to achieve his peace but realizes that it is not. He wants to find the "better world" while in high school, but he does not know how. Charlie wants what is spoken about tin the song, but he does not know how to achieve it.

25 August 1991

Dear Charlie,

The root of the problem is the fact that you are both happy and sad at the same time. In order to grow and learn from this fact, together, we should try to identify what makes you happy and what makes you sad, which you say is your family. The problem may be that you do not have family issues like some other people do, and it upsets you to think that you don't appreciate it or enjoy it as much as you should. This brings us to Michael. He, and his family issues, makes you think about yourself, and why you don't appreciate your family as much as you feel you should. Your family can be a source of happiness for you, but you must attempt to allow yourself to appreciate and feel their love. Your brother seems to be a strong source of support and comfort for you. As you begin high school, you should strengthen your relationship with him because he will be someone that will listen to you and understand you.

At the very end of the letter, you wrote that what you really wanted to write about was high school, but there is a reason that you did not write about that. Either what you really need to talk about is not high school or, if that is what you need to talk about, you need to focus on that subject in your next letter so that I can understand your fears and issues and hopefully help you. I am glad that you can look to me as a person that will listen and understand you, and I am completely willing to do that for you whether it continues to be through letters or whether we need to meet and further develop our relationship.

Love always,
Caroline
